Buying Guide: Porsche 991.1 Carrera S

3 min read

The Porsche 911 991.1 Carrera S represents, for many enthusiasts, the high point of the naturally aspirated 911, built just before turbocharged engines became mandatory on the generations that followed. It embodies both a major evolution of the classic 911 and a historic moment: it is the last generation of Carrera developed while Porsche was still a fully independent company.

More modern, larger and more comfortable than the 997 it replaces, the 991.1 was unveiled in 2011 in Frankfurt and marks a defining chapter in the model's history.

History and place in the 911 saga

The 991.1 is often seen as the end of an era. It is the last 911 Carrera to use a naturally aspirated flat-six, a type of engine that had shaped the 911's identity for decades. This generation saw close to 90% of its parts redesigned compared with the 997, making it one of the biggest technical leaps in the model's history.

Visually, the 991 stretches its lines, lowers its height and widens its wheelbase while keeping perfectly balanced proportions. This more modern, more refined silhouette, together with details such as the slim, elegant tail lights, gives the 911 a distinctly contemporary presence.

Mechanical character and driving sensations

The Carrera S version of the 991.1 is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.8-litre engine producing around 400 hp and generous torque, while revving to almost 8,000 rpm, a rev range worthy of even more focused models.

This engine delivers a linear response and a thrilling climb through the revs, with a distinctive soundtrack that remains one of the great pleasures on board this generation.

The 991.1 can be specified with a 7-speed manual gearbox, a first for a production 911, or with the famous dual-clutch PDK, which remains highly effective while contributing to the car's overall efficiency.

Versatility: everyday GT and pure sports car

What really sets the 991.1 Carrera S apart is its exceptional balance between comfort, refinement and performance. It is not just fast: it is also perfectly usable as a daily driver. It delivers genuine pleasure day to day while offering high-level performance.

One telling example: on the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife, the 991.1 Carrera S set a lap time that puts it on a par with a 997 GT3, which says a great deal about its dynamic ability.

Inside, the evolution is just as significant. The cabin benefits from a completely redesigned layout with a modern centre console, colour screens and ergonomics clearly a step upmarket from previous generations.

Variants and configurations to consider

The 991.1 range is broad: Coupé, Cabriolet and Targa are all available, each with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations (Carrera, Carrera 4, 2S/4S). Each has its own character:

  • The rear-wheel-drive Coupé remains the purest choice for dynamic driving.

  • The Carrera 4S offers reassuring grip, particularly in wet conditions.

  • The Cabriolet brings freedom and open-air sensations.

  • The Targa combines a unique style with an instantly recognisable silhouette.

Reliability and reputation

Compared with the 996 and 997 generations, the 991.1 has built a reputation for very high build quality, with no major known systemic issues. That level of finish and reliability is also reflected in used market prices: well-maintained 991.1s rarely sell cheaply.

The fact that the following generation (991.2) moved exclusively to turbocharged engines further strengthens the appeal of the naturally aspirated 991.1. Many enthusiast buyers are looking specifically for these pure engines, which sustains and even increases their long-term value.

An enthusiast's verdict

The Porsche 911 991.1 Carrera S represents a unique moment in the history of the 911: a modern, refined, technically accomplished machine that stays true to the pure character of the naturally aspirated era. It is a car that charms as much through its elegance, its versatility and its dynamic presence as through the emotion it delivers with every press of the throttle.
